Aliases MTLC, MYC target in laryngeal cancer

Description

MYCT1 (MYC Target 1) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6q25.3. It was initially identified as a direct transcriptional target of the MYC oncogene and is thought to function as a tumor suppressor. The gene encodes a nuclear protein involved in cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, and differentiation. Downregulation of MYCT1 has been observed in several cancers, including laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, gastric cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma, suggesting a role in tumorigenesis.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Laryngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Downregulation of MYCT1 by promoter methylation or MYC dysregulation leads to loss of growth suppression. PMID: 15674326
Gastric Cancer Reduced MYCT1 expression correlates with poor prognosis and increased proliferation. PMID: 23443108
Hepatocellular Carcinoma MYCT1 acts as a tumor suppressor; its loss promotes cell migration and invasion. PMID: 27323849

Protein Summary

The MYCT1 protein is a 224-amino-acid nuclear protein with a molecular weight of approximately 25 kDa. It contains a putative nuclear localization signal and is involved in transcriptional regulation. MYCT1 is thought to mediate some of the tumor-suppressive effects of MYC by promoting apoptosis and inhibiting cell cycle progression. Its expression is frequently silenced by promoter hypermethylation in cancer.
