MRC1 encodes the mannose receptor, a type I transmembrane C-type lectin primarily expressed on subsets of macrophages and dendritic cells. Protein Summary

The mannose receptor (MRC1/CD206) is a 175 kDa type I transmembrane protein with an N-terminal cysteine-rich domain, a fibronectin type II domain, eight C-type lectin domains, a transmembrane region, and a short cytoplasmic tail. It recognizes glycans on pathogens and self-antigens, mediating endocytosis and antigen presentation. It is predominantly expressed on tissue macrophages and immature dendritic cells, and its expression is upregulated by IL-4/IL-13 (M2 polarization) and downregulated by IFN-gamma. MRC1 is a key marker for alternatively activated macrophages and is involved in tissue homeostasis, clearance of extracellular matrix components, and modulation of inflammation.
