Description

MMP26 encodes a member of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family, which are zinc-dependent endopeptidases involved in the degradation of extracellular matrix components. MMP26, also known as matrilysin-2 or endometase, is primarily expressed in epithelial tissues and plays a role in tissue remodeling, wound healing, and tumor invasion. It is frequently upregulated in various cancers and has been implicated in cancer progression and metastasis.

Disease Associations

Endometrial Cancer Overexpression of MMP26 promotes invasion and metastasis via ECM degradation. PMID: 15604244
Breast Cancer MMP26 expression correlates with poor prognosis and increased tumor aggressiveness. PMID: 16982746

Protein Summary

MMP26 is a 261-amino acid protein with a predicted molecular weight of 28.9 kDa. It contains a signal peptide, a prodomain with a cysteine switch, and a catalytic domain with the zinc-binding motif HExxHxxGxxH. Unlike other MMPs, MMP26 lacks a hemopexin-like domain. It is secreted as a zymogen and activated by proteolytic removal of the prodomain. MMP26 cleaves type IV collagen, fibronectin, and gelatin, contributing to extracellular matrix remodeling.
