Description

MKNK2 (MAPK interacting serine/threonine kinase 2) encodes a member of the MAP kinase-interacting serine/threonine kinase family. This kinase is activated by ERK and p38 MAP kinases and phosphorylates eukaryotic initiation factor 4E (eIF4E), thereby regulating translation initiation. MKNK2 is involved in cellular stress responses, proliferation, and survival, and has been implicated in various cancers and neurological disorders.

Protein Summary

MKNK2 encodes a serine/threonine kinase that phosphorylates eIF4E, a key regulator of cap-dependent translation. The protein contains an N-terminal kinase domain and a C-terminal MAPK-binding domain. Alternative splicing generates two isoforms (Mnk2a and Mnk2b) with distinct regulatory properties. MKNK2 is widely expressed, with highest levels in brain and testis, and is implicated in cancer cell growth and survival.
