Description
METAP2 (methionyl aminopeptidase 2) encodes a member of the methionine aminopeptidase family that catalyzes the removal of N-terminal methionine from nascent proteins, a critical step for protein stability and function. The protein also possesses eIF2α phosphorylation-independent anti-apoptotic activity and is a target of the angiogenesis inhibitor fumagillin. METAP2 is involved in cell cycle regulation, angiogenesis, and tumor growth.

Protein Summary
METAP2 is a 478-amino-acid protein that functions as a homodimeric metalloprotease. It removes N-terminal methionine from nascent polypeptides, a prerequisite for subsequent N-terminal modifications. The protein also binds to eIF2α and inhibits its phosphorylation, thereby protecting cells from apoptosis. METAP2 is the target of the anti-angiogenic drug fumagillin and its analogs, which covalently modify the active-site histidine. The protein is widely expressed, with highest levels in testis and liver.
