Description
MED24 is a component of the Mediator complex, a multiprotein complex that acts as a bridge between transcription factors and RNA polymerase II. It is essential for regulated transcription of nearly all RNA polymerase II-dependent genes. MED24 specifically interacts with nuclear receptors and other transcription activators to facilitate gene expression.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Breast cancer | MED24 overexpression may contribute to tumorigenesis via enhanced transcriptional coactivation of oncogenic pathways. | PMID: 14562041 |
| Prostate cancer | MED24 is part of the Mediator complex that interacts with androgen receptor, potentially influencing prostate cancer progression. | PMID: 12493763 |
| Colorectal cancer | Altered MED24 expression has been observed in colorectal cancer tissues, suggesting a role in tumor development. | PMID: 19029980 |

Protein Summary
MED24 is a 100 kDa protein that contains a conserved Med24 domain. It localizes to the nucleus and is a stable component of the Mediator complex. The protein interacts with various transcription factors, including nuclear receptors, and is required for proper transcriptional activation. Its expression is ubiquitous but varies across tissues.
