Description

MED21 encodes a component of the Mediator complex, a multiprotein coactivator required for RNA polymerase II transcription. The protein directly interacts with other Mediator subunits and transcription factors to regulate gene expression. MED21 is evolutionarily conserved and essential for embryonic development.

Protein Summary

MED21 is a 144-amino acid protein (16.5 kDa) that contains a conserved SRB7 domain. It directly binds MED4 and MED31 within the Mediator complex. The protein is ubiquitously expressed and localizes to the nucleus. Its structure includes a helical domain critical for complex assembly.
