Description

The MB gene encodes myoglobin, a cytoplasmic hemoprotein expressed primarily in cardiac and skeletal muscle. Myoglobin reversibly binds oxygen, facilitating oxygen storage and diffusion within muscle cells, and plays a role in nitric oxide scavenging and mitochondrial respiration.
