MAPK15 contains a unique C-terminal extension that mediates its localization and function. It is activated by cellular stresses

MAPK15 is a 544-amino acid protein with a typical kinase domain and a unique C-terminal extension that contains a nuclear localization signal and a ciliary targeting motif. It is activated by oxidative stress
serum starvation
and DNA damage. MAPK15 phosphorylates substrates involved in autophagy (e.g.
ULK1)
cilia formation (e.g.
CEP164)
and cell cycle regulation. Its activity is regulated by autophosphorylation and interaction with scaffold proteins.
