Description

LSM1 encodes a member of the LSM (Like Sm) family of RNA-binding proteins. The protein is a component of the LSM1-7 complex, which localizes to cytoplasmic processing bodies (P-bodies) and is essential for the decapping and degradation of mRNA. It also participates in the splicing and stability of U6 small nuclear RNA. LSM1 is involved in post-transcriptional gene regulation and has been implicated in cellular proliferation and cancer.

Protein Summary

LSM1 is a 133-amino-acid protein (15.5 kDa) that contains an Sm domain typical of RNA-binding proteins. It forms a heteroheptameric complex with LSM2-7, which binds to the 3' end of U6 snRNA and to the 5' cap of mRNA to facilitate decapping. The protein is predominantly cytoplasmic and localizes to P-bodies. Its structure includes a conserved RNA-binding motif that recognizes oligo(A) tails.
