Description

LGALS14 encodes galectin-14, a member of the galectin family of beta-galactoside-binding proteins. It is predominantly expressed in the placenta and plays a role in immune modulation, particularly at the maternal-fetal interface. The protein is involved in cell adhesion, apoptosis, and regulation of inflammatory responses.

Protein Summary

Galectin-14 is a 14 kDa soluble protein containing a single carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD) that binds beta-galactoside sugars. It is secreted and localizes to the extracellular matrix and cell surface. In the placenta, it modulates T-cell responses and promotes maternal-fetal tolerance. Its expression is largely restricted to placental trophoblasts.
