Description
LGALS12 encodes galectin-12, a member of the galectin family of beta-galactoside-binding proteins. It is predominantly expressed in adipose tissue and plays a role in adipocyte differentiation, lipid metabolism, and apoptosis. Galectin-12 localizes to the cytoplasm and nucleus and may regulate cell cycle and immune responses.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Obesity | Altered expression in adipose tissue may affect adipocyte function and energy homeostasis. | NCBI Gene, UniProt |
| Type 2 Diabetes | Potential involvement in insulin resistance through adipokine regulation. | NCBI Gene |
| Cancer | Dysregulated expression reported in certain cancers; may influence apoptosis and cell proliferation. | COSMIC, NCBI Gene |

Protein Summary
Galectin-12 is a 336-amino acid protein with two carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs). It binds beta-galactoside sugars and is involved in adipocyte differentiation, apoptosis, and immune modulation. The protein is primarily cytoplasmic but can translocate to the nucleus. It is encoded by the LGALS12 gene on chromosome 11q13.1.
