Description

KRT23 (keratin 23) is a protein-coding gene that belongs to the type I (acidic) keratin family. Keratins are intermediate filament proteins responsible for the structural integrity of epithelial cells. KRT23 is expressed in various epithelial tissues and is involved in cell differentiation and proliferation. It has been implicated in several cancers, including pancreatic, colorectal, and gastric cancers, where it may serve as a diagnostic or prognostic biomarker.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Pancreatic cancer Overexpression of KRT23 is associated with tumor progression and poor prognosis. PMID: 25984338
Colorectal cancer KRT23 is upregulated in colorectal adenocarcinomas and may promote cell migration. PMID: 23361059
Gastric cancer Elevated KRT23 expression correlates with lymph node metastasis and advanced stage. PMID: 27573527
Hepatocellular carcinoma KRT23 is differentially expressed in liver cancer tissues compared to normal liver. PMID: 25602746

Protein Summary

Keratin 23 is a 48.5 kDa type I intermediate filament protein composed of 422 amino acids. It contains a central alpha-helical rod domain flanked by non-helical head and tail domains. KRT23 forms heteropolymers with type II keratins to build cytoskeletal networks in epithelial cells. Its expression is tightly regulated during epithelial differentiation and is frequently altered in epithelial cancers.
