Description
The INHBC gene encodes the beta C subunit of inhibin, a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily. Inhibins are heterodimeric hormones that regulate pituitary follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion and have roles in gonadal function, embryonic development, and cell proliferation. The beta C subunit can form activin complexes (e.g., activin C) that modulate signaling pathways.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Prostate cancer | Altered INHBC expression may disrupt activin/inhibin balance, affecting cell growth and differentiation. | PMID: 10652318 |
| Ovarian cancer | Dysregulation of inhibin subunits, including INHBC, is associated with tumor progression and hormone secretion. | PMID: 11585764 |
| Endometrial cancer | Aberrant expression of INHBC contributes to abnormal TGF-beta signaling in endometrial tissue. | PMID: 12117752 |

Protein Summary
Inhibin beta C chain (UniProt P55103) is a 352-amino acid protein that dimerizes with other inhibin/activin subunits to form bioactive ligands. It contains a conserved TGF-beta domain and is secreted as part of heterodimeric complexes. The protein is involved in regulating FSH secretion and modulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis.
