Description
IL1R2 encodes the interleukin 1 receptor type 2, a decoy receptor that binds interleukin 1 (IL-1) ligands without inducing intracellular signaling. It functions as a negative regulator of IL-1-mediated inflammation by sequestering IL-1α and IL-1β and preventing their interaction with the functional IL-1 receptor type 1 (IL1R1). The gene is located on chromosome 2q11.2 and is primarily expressed on immune cells, including monocytes, neutrophils, and B cells.

Protein Summary
IL1R2 is a 386-amino acid transmembrane glycoprotein with three extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains, a single transmembrane helix, and a short cytoplasmic tail lacking the TIR domain required for signaling. It exists in membrane-bound and soluble forms (sIL1R2). The soluble form is generated by proteolytic cleavage or alternative splicing and acts as a decoy to neutralize IL-1 in circulation. The protein is heavily N-glycosylated and expressed on the surface of immune cells.
