Description

IGF2BP1 (Insulin Like Growth Factor 2 mRNA Binding Protein 1) encodes a member of the IGF-II mRNA-binding protein family. The protein binds to the 5' UTR of the insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) mRNA and regulates its translation. It is involved in post-transcriptional regulation, including mRNA localization, stability, and translational control. IGF2BP1 is highly expressed during embryonic development and is re-expressed in various cancers, where it promotes cell proliferation, migration, and invasion.

Protein Summary

IGF2BP1 is a 577-amino acid RNA-binding protein containing two RNA recognition motifs (RRMs) and four hnRNP K homology (KH) domains. It binds to specific mRNA targets, including IGF2, MYC, CD44, and beta-catenin, regulating their stability, localization, and translation. The protein is predominantly cytoplasmic and localizes to stress granules and P-bodies. IGF2BP1 is critical for embryonic development and is frequently upregulated in cancers, where it acts as an oncogene by enhancing the expression of growth-promoting and metastatic genes.
