Description
IFNW1 encodes interferon omega 1, a type I interferon cytokine produced in response to viral and microbial infections. It binds to the type I interferon receptor (IFNAR1/IFNAR2) complex, activating JAK-STAT signaling to induce an antiviral state, modulate immune responses, and inhibit cell proliferation. IFNW1 is expressed in leukocytes and has overlapping but distinct activities compared to other type I interferons.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Viral infections (e.g., influenza, SARS-CoV-2) | IFNW1 induces antiviral gene expression via IFNAR signaling | NCBI Gene, UniProt |
| Autoimmune disorders (e.g., systemic lupus erythematosus) | Dysregulated type I interferon signaling contributes to autoimmunity | OMIM, ClinVar |
| Cancer (e.g., melanoma, leukemia) | IFNW1 can inhibit tumor cell proliferation; used in experimental therapies | COSMIC, NCBI Gene |

Protein Summary
Interferon omega 1 is a 195-amino-acid secreted cytokine with a molecular weight of approximately 22 kDa. It contains a signal peptide (residues 1-23) and a mature interferon domain. The protein adopts a typical alpha-helical cytokine fold and is glycosylated. It exerts antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory effects through binding to the IFNAR1/IFNAR2 receptor complex.
