Description
IFNE encodes interferon epsilon, a type I interferon cytokine involved in innate immune responses against viral and bacterial pathogens. It is constitutively expressed in epithelial tissues, particularly the female reproductive tract, and plays a role in mucosal immunity. IFNE also exhibits antitumor activity and is regulated by hormones and inflammatory signals.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Viral Infections | IFNE provides antiviral protection in mucosal epithelia by inducing interferon-stimulated genes | NCBI Gene, UniProt |
| Bacterial Infections | IFNE contributes to host defense against bacterial pathogens in reproductive tissues | UniProt |
| Cancer | IFNE has antitumor effects; dysregulation may contribute to tumor progression | NCBI Gene |

Protein Summary
Interferon epsilon is a secreted type I interferon of approximately 20 kDa. It binds to the IFNAR1/IFNAR2 receptor complex, activating JAK-STAT signaling and inducing expression of interferon-stimulated genes. It is constitutively expressed in epithelial tissues, especially the female reproductive tract, and is regulated by hormones. It has antiviral, antibacterial, and antitumor activities.
