Description

IFNA14 encodes a member of the type I interferon family, interferon alpha 14. This cytokine is secreted by cells in response to viral infection and binds to the interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR) to activate JAK-STAT signaling, leading to antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory effects.

Disease Associations

Hepatitis C virus infection IFNA14 is part of the endogenous interferon response; polymorphisms may influence treatment response ClinVar, PMID: 19064627
Systemic lupus erythematosus Type I interferon pathway dysregulation, including IFNA14 overexpression, contributes to autoimmunity OMIM 152700, PMID: 23291587
COVID-19 severity Reduced type I interferon activity, including IFNA14, associated with severe disease ClinVar, PMID: 32972995

Protein Summary

Interferon alpha 14 (IFNA14) is a 189-amino acid secreted cytokine with a signal peptide (residues 1-23) and a mature chain (24-189). It belongs to the type I interferon family and shares structural homology with other IFN-alpha subtypes. The protein binds to IFNAR1/IFNAR2 receptor complex, activating STAT1/STAT2 transcription factors to induce interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs).
