Description

GSTT2 encodes a member of the theta class of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs). These enzymes catalyze the conjugation of reduced glutathione to a variety of electrophilic and hydrophobic compounds, playing a key role in cellular detoxification and protection against oxidative stress. GSTT2 is expressed in multiple tissues and is involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics, including carcinogens and therapeutic drugs.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Asthma GSTT2 polymorphisms may alter detoxification of environmental pollutants, affecting asthma susceptibility. NCBI Gene, ClinVar
Cancer (various) GSTT2 copy number loss or reduced expression is associated with increased risk of certain cancers due to impaired detoxification. COSMIC, NCBI Gene
Drug-induced liver injury Variants in GSTT2 may affect metabolism of drugs, leading to hepatotoxicity. ClinVar

Protein Summary

GSTT2 is a 244-amino acid protein belonging to the theta class of glutathione S-transferases. It forms a homodimer and catalyzes the conjugation of glutathione to various electrophilic substrates, including environmental carcinogens and chemotherapeutic agents. The protein is primarily cytosolic and expressed in detoxification organs such as liver and kidney.
