Description

GDF7 (Growth Differentiation Factor 7), also known as BMP12, is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family and the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. It plays a critical role in the development and maintenance of tendons and ligaments, as well as in neural development. GDF7 signals through type I and type II serine/threonine kinase receptors and activates SMAD-dependent pathways.

Protein Summary

GDF7 is a secreted ligand of the TGF-β superfamily. The precursor protein undergoes proteolytic processing to generate a mature dimeric growth factor. It binds to BMP type I and type II receptors, leading to phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of SMAD transcription factors. GDF7 is essential for tendon and ligament formation, and also contributes to neural cell fate specification in the developing spinal cord.
