Description

GALR3 encodes galanin receptor 3, a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) for the neuropeptide galanin. The receptor is primarily expressed in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, mediating galanin's effects on hormone release, pain modulation, feeding behavior, and neuroendocrine regulation. Activation of GALR3 typically couples to Gi/o proteins, inhibiting adenylate cyclase and modulating ion channels.

Protein Summary

Galanin receptor 3 (GALR3) is a 368-amino acid integral membrane protein with seven transmembrane domains, characteristic of GPCRs. It binds galanin with high affinity and couples to Gi/o proteins, leading to inhibition of cAMP production. GALR3 is less studied than GALR1 and GALR2, but emerging evidence suggests roles in neuroendocrine regulation, mood disorders, and pain modulation. The protein is encoded by a single-exon gene on chromosome 22q13.1.
