Description

GABRP encodes the pi (π) subunit of the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor, a ligand-gated chloride ion channel. This subunit is predominantly expressed in epithelial tissues and is implicated in cancer cell proliferation and migration. Unlike other GABA-A subunits, GABRP is not highly expressed in the central nervous system but is found in peripheral tissues such as breast, lung, and pancreas.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Breast Cancer Overexpression of GABRP promotes tumor growth and metastasis via PI3K/AKT signaling PMID: 25691811
Pancreatic Cancer GABRP upregulation correlates with poor prognosis and increased cell invasion PMID: 29367642
Lung Adenocarcinoma GABRP expression is associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) PMID: 31019238

Protein Summary

The GABA-A receptor pi subunit (GABRP) is a 437-amino acid protein with four transmembrane domains. It forms heteropentameric chloride channels when co-expressed with other GABA-A subunits. Unlike most GABA-A subunits, GABRP is not widely expressed in the brain but is found in epithelial tissues, where it modulates cell proliferation and migration. Its overexpression in several cancers suggests a role in tumor progression.
