Description
FUT5 encodes alpha-(1,3)-fucosyltransferase 5, a Golgi membrane-bound enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of fucose from GDP-fucose to N-acetyllactosamine-type oligosaccharides, forming Lewis a (Lea) and Lewis x (Lex) antigens. These carbohydrate structures are critical for cell-cell adhesion, immune recognition, and pathogen binding. FUT5 is part of the fucosyltransferase family and is expressed in various tissues, with highest levels in the gastrointestinal tract and kidney.

Protein Summary
Fucosyltransferase 5 (FUT5) is a 374-amino acid type II transmembrane protein localized to the Golgi apparatus. It catalyzes the addition of fucose in alpha-1,3 linkage to type 2 acceptor substrates (e.g., N-acetyllactosamine) and alpha-1,4 linkage to type 1 acceptors, producing Lewis x and Lewis a antigens, respectively. The protein contains a short N-terminal cytoplasmic tail, a transmembrane domain, and a large C-terminal catalytic domain facing the Golgi lumen. FUT5 shares high sequence homology with FUT3 and FUT6, and its activity is essential for the synthesis of sialyl Lewis epitopes involved in leukocyte trafficking and cancer metastasis.
