Description

FAIM (Fas Apoptotic Inhibitory Molecule) is a protein-coding gene that encodes an anti-apoptotic protein. It protects cells from Fas-induced apoptosis and is involved in neuronal survival, immune regulation, and cancer cell resistance to cell death. Alternative splicing produces two isoforms: FAIM-L (long) and FAIM-S (short).

Protein Summary

FAIM is a small anti-apoptotic protein (approx. 20 kDa) that inhibits Fas-mediated cell death by interfering with caspase-8 activation. It is widely expressed in tissues, with highest levels in brain and spleen. Two isoforms exist: FAIM-L (long) contains an additional exon and is more potent in neuroprotection; FAIM-S (short) is ubiquitously expressed. FAIM also modulates NF-κB signaling and is implicated in cancer cell survival and neurodegenerative diseases.
