Description

FABP7 encodes the brain-type fatty acid binding protein (B-FABP), a small cytoplasmic protein that binds long-chain fatty acids and retinoic acid. It is primarily expressed in radial glial cells and astrocytes during central nervous system development, where it regulates lipid homeostasis, cell proliferation, and differentiation. In adults, FABP7 is re-expressed in certain cancers, including glioblastoma and breast cancer, and is associated with poor prognosis.

Protein Summary

FABP7 (B-FABP) is a 132-amino acid protein (15 kDa) that belongs to the fatty acid binding protein family. It adopts a β-barrel structure that encapsulates hydrophobic ligands such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and oleic acid. FABP7 shuttles fatty acids to nuclear receptors (e.g., PPARγ) to modulate gene expression. In the brain, it is essential for radial glial cell morphology and neurogenesis. In cancer, FABP7 enhances lipid metabolism and signaling pathways that drive invasion and metastasis.
