Description

EIF4EBP2 encodes a member of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) binding protein family. The protein binds to eIF4E and inhibits cap-dependent translation by preventing the assembly of the eIF4F complex. Phosphorylation by mTOR signaling releases the inhibition, allowing translation initiation. This gene is involved in cell growth, proliferation, and synaptic plasticity.

Protein Summary

The EIF4EBP2 protein (4E-BP2) is a 120-amino acid protein that binds to eIF4E via a conserved YXXXXLΦ motif. It inhibits cap-dependent translation by competing with eIF4G for eIF4E binding. Phosphorylation by mTORC1 at multiple sites (Thr37, Thr46, Ser65, Thr70) causes dissociation from eIF4E, enabling translation initiation. 4E-BP2 is highly expressed in the brain and plays a critical role in synaptic plasticity and memory.
