Description

EIF3I encodes a subunit of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 (eIF3) complex, which is essential for the initiation of protein synthesis. The protein binds to the 40S ribosomal subunit and facilitates mRNA recruitment, scanning, and start codon recognition. EIF3I also interacts with the TGF-beta receptor and may play roles in cell growth and differentiation.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Breast cancer Overexpression of EIF3I promotes translation of oncogenic mRNAs, enhancing cell proliferation and survival. PMID: 23431171
Colorectal cancer EIF3I upregulation correlates with poor prognosis and increased metastatic potential. PMID: 25605247
Hepatocellular carcinoma EIF3I is overexpressed and contributes to tumor growth via enhanced translation of cyclin D1. PMID: 27485122

Protein Summary

EIF3I is a 36 kDa subunit of the eIF3 complex, containing a WD40 repeat domain that mediates protein-protein interactions. It is localized in the cytoplasm and is involved in the assembly of the 43S preinitiation complex. The protein also interacts with the TGF-beta type I receptor, linking translation initiation to growth factor signaling.
