Description

CYP2W1 encodes a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase that is predominantly expressed in fetal and tumor tissues, with very low expression in normal adult tissues. It is involved in the oxidative metabolism of various xenobiotics and endogenous compounds. CYP2W1 has gained attention as a tumor-specific antigen and a potential target for prodrug activation in colorectal cancer therapy.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Colorectal Cancer Overexpression of CYP2W1 in tumor cells activates prodrugs (e.g., duocarmycin analogs) leading to selective cytotoxicity PMID: 17079494, PMID: 23349050
Hepatocellular Carcinoma Aberrant CYP2W1 expression contributes to altered drug metabolism and tumor progression PMID: 25620005
Gastric Cancer Elevated CYP2W1 mRNA levels correlate with poor prognosis PMID: 27323851

Protein Summary

CYP2W1 is a 55.8 kDa microsomal cytochrome P450 with 490 amino acids. It contains a conserved heme-binding domain and is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum. The protein exhibits low expression in normal adult tissues but is upregulated in several cancers, particularly colorectal cancer. It metabolizes arachidonic acid and certain xenobiotics, and its tumor-specific expression makes it a candidate for targeted cancer therapy.
