Description
CXCL12 (C-X-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 12), also known as stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF1), is a chemokine that binds to the receptors CXCR4 and CXCR7. It plays a critical role in embryonic development, hematopoiesis, immune cell trafficking, and angiogenesis. CXCL12 is constitutively expressed in many tissues and is involved in the homing of hematopoietic stem cells to the bone marrow. Dysregulation of CXCL12 signaling contributes to cancer metastasis, inflammatory diseases, and HIV infection, where it acts as a natural ligand for the HIV co-receptor CXCR4.
