Description

CRTAM (Cytotoxic And Regulatory T Cell Molecule) encodes a type I transmembrane protein belonging to the nectin-like family of immunoglobulin-like receptors. It is expressed on activated T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and certain dendritic cell subsets. CRTAM functions as a cell adhesion molecule and co-stimulatory receptor, promoting T cell activation, cytotoxicity, and cytokine production. Its ligand is Necl-2 (CADM1). CRTAM plays roles in immune surveillance, tumor immunity, and regulation of T cell responses.

Protein Summary

CRTAM is a 389-amino acid type I transmembrane glycoprotein with an extracellular region containing one immunoglobulin-like V-type domain, a transmembrane segment, and a cytoplasmic tail with potential signaling motifs. It is predominantly expressed on activated CD8+ T cells, NK cells, and a subset of CD4+ T cells. Upon binding its ligand CADM1 (Necl-2), CRTAM enhances T cell adhesion, promotes IFN-gamma production, and supports cytotoxic activity. The protein is implicated in immune synapse formation and tumor immune surveillance.
