Description

CDK11A (cyclin dependent kinase 11A) is a protein-coding gene that belongs to the cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) family. It encodes a serine/threonine protein kinase that plays critical roles in cell cycle regulation, particularly during the G2/M phase, and in transcriptional regulation. The gene produces multiple isoforms through alternative splicing, including a larger 110 kDa form (CDK11-p110) involved in transcription and RNA processing, and a smaller 58 kDa form (CDK11-p58) that is activated during mitosis. CDK11A is located on chromosome 1p36.33, a region frequently altered in cancers.

Protein Summary

The CDK11A protein is a serine/threonine kinase with two major isoforms: CDK11-p110 (110 kDa) and CDK11-p58 (58 kDa). CDK11-p110 is ubiquitously expressed and involved in transcriptional elongation and RNA splicing, while CDK11-p58 is specifically expressed during mitosis and regulates centrosome maturation and spindle formation. The protein contains a conserved kinase domain and a PITSLRE motif characteristic of CDK family members. Its activity is regulated by binding to cyclin L1 or L2.
