Description

CCL16 (C-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 16) is a small cytokine belonging to the CC chemokine family. It is primarily expressed in the liver, thymus, and spleen, and functions as a chemoattractant for monocytes, lymphocytes, and dendritic cells. CCL16 binds to chemokine receptors such as CCR1, CCR2, CCR5, and CCR8, playing a role in immune surveillance and inflammation. It is also known as HCC-4 (Hemofiltrate CC Chemokine 4) and LEC (Liver-Expressed Chemokine).

Protein Summary

CCL16 is a 120-amino-acid secreted chemokine with a typical CC motif. It is synthesized as a precursor with a 23-amino-acid signal peptide. The mature protein (97 amino acids) contains four conserved cysteine residues forming two disulfide bonds. CCL16 is highly expressed in the liver and has been implicated in hepatic inflammation and cancer. It exhibits chemotactic activity for monocytes, lymphocytes, and dendritic cells, and can also induce angiogenesis under certain conditions.
