Description
BGLAP encodes osteocalcin, a small non-collagenous protein secreted by osteoblasts. It is the most abundant osteoblast-specific protein and undergoes post-translational gamma-carboxylation of glutamic acid residues, which is essential for its calcium-binding properties. Osteocalcin is deposited into bone extracellular matrix and regulates bone mineralization. The uncarboxylated form acts as a hormone to influence glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and energy expenditure.

Protein Summary
