Description

ZNF124 encodes a zinc finger protein of the Krüppel-associated box (KRAB) domain-containing family. The protein localizes to the nucleus and functions as a transcriptional repressor via its KRAB domain. ZNF124 is involved in regulating cell proliferation and differentiation, and its dysregulation has been implicated in several cancers, including breast and colorectal cancer.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Breast cancer Overexpression of ZNF124 may promote cell proliferation through transcriptional repression of tumor suppressor genes PMID: 25605248
Colorectal cancer ZNF124 upregulation correlates with poor prognosis and increased metastatic potential PMID: 28723891
Hepatocellular carcinoma ZNF124 silencing reduces cell viability and induces apoptosis in liver cancer cell lines PMID: 31065123

Protein Summary

ZNF124 is a 548-amino acid nuclear protein containing a KRAB domain at the N-terminus and 12 C2H2-type zinc finger motifs. The KRAB domain mediates transcriptional repression by recruiting chromatin-modifying complexes such as SETDB1 and TRIM28. The zinc finger array is responsible for sequence-specific DNA binding. ZNF124 is expressed at low levels in most normal tissues but is upregulated in several cancer types, suggesting a role in oncogenesis.
