Description
WNT8A encodes a member of the WNT gene family of secreted signaling proteins. These proteins are involved in oncogenesis and several developmental processes, including regulation of cell fate and patterning during embryogenesis. WNT8A is specifically implicated in early embryonic development, particularly in the formation of the primitive streak and mesoderm induction.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Colorectal Cancer | WNT8A overexpression activates canonical WNT/β-catenin signaling, promoting cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. | COSMIC, NCBI |
| Hepatocellular Carcinoma | Upregulation of WNT8A contributes to aberrant WNT signaling and tumor progression. | NCBI, COSMIC |
| Gastric Cancer | WNT8A expression is elevated and associated with poor prognosis via β-catenin pathway activation. | NCBI, COSMIC |

Protein Summary
WNT8A is a secreted glycoprotein of approximately 40 kDa that binds to Frizzled receptors to activate the canonical WNT/β-catenin signaling cascade. It plays a critical role in early embryogenesis, particularly in mesoderm formation and axis specification. In adults, WNT8A expression is largely restricted to testis and placenta, but aberrant reactivation is observed in several cancers.
