Description

TSPO2 (Translocator Protein 2) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 6p21.1. It encodes a mitochondrial membrane protein involved in cholesterol transport and steroidogenesis. TSPO2 is a paralog of TSPO and is primarily expressed in testis and certain cancer cell lines. Its function is linked to the regulation of mitochondrial permeability and apoptosis.

Protein Summary

TSPO2 encodes a 169-amino acid protein with a molecular weight of approximately 18 kDa. It is localized to the mitochondrial outer membrane and contains a conserved cholesterol-binding domain. The protein is thought to facilitate cholesterol import into mitochondria, a rate-limiting step in steroid hormone synthesis. TSPO2 is predominantly expressed in testis and may play a role in male fertility.
