Description
RPSA2 is a pseudogene of the RPSA gene, which encodes ribosomal protein SA (also known as 40S ribosomal protein SA or laminin receptor 1). Pseudogenes are non-functional copies of genes that have lost their protein-coding ability due to mutations. RPSA2 is located on chromosome 1p36.13 and is transcribed in some tissues, but it does not produce a functional protein. Its exact biological role is not fully understood, but pseudogenes can regulate their parent genes through mechanisms such as competing for microRNAs or acting as endogenous siRNAs. RPSA2 may have implications in cancer and other diseases, but further research is needed.
Disease Associations
| Disease category | Pathophysiological mechanism | Genomic evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer (potential) | Pseudogene-mediated regulation of RPSA expression may influence tumor progression, as RPSA is involved in cell adhesion and proliferation. | Limited evidence; inferred from pseudogene regulatory mechanisms and RPSA's role in cancer. |
| Not established | No direct disease association has been confirmed for RPSA2. | No clinical evidence available. |

Protein Summary
RPSA2 is a pseudogene and does not produce a protein. It is a non-functional copy of the RPSA gene, which encodes the 40S ribosomal protein SA. Pseudogenes like RPSA2 may have regulatory roles at the RNA level, but no protein product is synthesized.
