Description

MOGAT3 encodes monoacylglycerol O-acyltransferase 3, an enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of diacylglycerol from 2-monoacylglycerol and fatty acyl-CoA. This reaction is a key step in the monoacylglycerol pathway for triacylglycerol synthesis, primarily in the intestine. The protein is localized to the endoplasmic reticulum and is involved in dietary fat absorption.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Obesity Altered MOGAT3 expression may affect triacylglycerol storage and energy balance. Limited evidence; inferred from functional role in lipid metabolism.
Hypertriglyceridemia Potential contribution to elevated serum triglycerides via increased intestinal fat absorption. No direct clinical association reported; based on pathway involvement.

Protein Summary

MOGAT3 is a 345-amino acid integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum. It belongs to the diacylglycerol acyltransferase 2 (DGAT2) family and catalyzes the acylation of 2-monoacylglycerol to form diacylglycerol, a precursor for triacylglycerol synthesis. The enzyme is highly expressed in the small intestine and plays a critical role in dietary fat absorption.
