Description

LVRN encodes laeverin, a type II transmembrane zinc-dependent aminopeptidase A (APA) that cleaves N-terminal aspartate and glutamate residues. It is specifically expressed in the placenta, particularly in extravillous trophoblasts, and is involved in cell migration, invasion, and placental development. Dysregulation is associated with preeclampsia.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Preeclampsia Altered LVRN expression may impair trophoblast invasion and spiral artery remodeling, contributing to placental ischemia and maternal hypertension. PMID: 21940940; ClinVar: LVRN variants associated with preeclampsia risk

Protein Summary

Laeverin is a 945-amino acid type II transmembrane protein with a zinc-binding motif (HEXXH) characteristic of M1 family aminopeptidases. It is highly glycosylated and localized to the cell surface of extravillous trophoblasts. The protein cleaves angiotensin II to angiotensin III, modulating local blood pressure and trophoblast migration. Its expression is regulated by hypoxia and steroid hormones.
