Description

IL25 (interleukin 25) is a cytokine belonging to the IL-17 family, also known as IL-17E. It is produced by various cell types including Th2 cells, mast cells, eosinophils, and epithelial cells. IL25 promotes type 2 immune responses by inducing the production of IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13, and plays a critical role in allergic inflammation, asthma, and host defense against helminth infections.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Asthma IL25 drives Th2 cytokine production, leading to airway eosinophilia and hyperresponsiveness. NCBI Gene, OMIM
Allergic rhinitis IL25 enhances IgE production and eosinophil recruitment in nasal mucosa. NCBI Gene, OMIM
Atopic dermatitis IL25 expression is elevated in skin lesions, promoting type 2 inflammation. NCBI Gene, OMIM
Helminth infection IL25 is essential for expulsion of parasitic worms via Th2 responses. NCBI Gene, UniProt

Protein Summary

Interleukin 25 (IL-25) is a 177-amino acid protein with a signal peptide and a fibronectin type III domain. It forms a homodimer and signals through the IL-17RA/IL-17RB receptor complex, activating NF-kB and MAPK pathways. IL-25 is a key initiator of type 2 immunity and is implicated in allergic diseases and anti-helminth responses.
