Description

IFNA8 (Interferon Alpha 8) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 9p21.3. It encodes a member of the type I interferon family, interferon alpha-8, which is secreted by immune cells in response to viral infections. This cytokine binds to the IFNAR1/IFNAR2 receptor complex, activating JAK-STAT signaling to induce an antiviral state, modulate immune responses, and inhibit cell proliferation. IFNA8 is part of a cluster of interferon alpha genes on chromosome 9.

Protein Summary

Interferon alpha-8 (IFNA8) is a 189-amino-acid secreted cytokine with a signal peptide (residues 1-23) and a mature chain (24-189). It belongs to the type I interferon family and shares structural homology with other IFN-alpha subtypes. The protein forms a five-helix bundle and binds to the IFNAR1/IFNAR2 receptor complex, triggering JAK1/TYK2 phosphorylation and STAT1/STAT2 activation. This leads to transcription of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) that inhibit viral replication and modulate immune responses.
