Description

GPRC5A (G protein-coupled receptor class C group 5 member A) is a protein-coding gene located on chromosome 12p13.31. It encodes a member of the class C family of G protein-coupled receptors, which is induced by retinoic acid. The protein is involved in cell growth regulation and has been implicated as a tumor suppressor in lung cancer. Expression is predominantly in lung tissue, and loss of GPRC5A expression is associated with lung carcinogenesis.

Disease Associations

Disease category Pathophysiological mechanism Genomic evidence
Lung cancer Loss of GPRC5A expression promotes tumorigenesis; acts as a tumor suppressor PMID: 15899810, PMID: 22956720
Non-small cell lung carcinoma Downregulation of GPRC5A correlates with poor prognosis PMID: 22956720
Breast cancer Altered expression observed; potential role in tumor progression PMID: 19177216

Protein Summary

GPRC5A is a 357-amino acid protein belonging to the class C family of G protein-coupled receptors. It contains a seven-transmembrane domain and is localized to the plasma membrane. The protein is induced by retinoic acid and functions as a tumor suppressor, particularly in lung tissue. It negatively regulates cell proliferation and is involved in signal transduction. Loss of GPRC5A expression is a frequent event in lung cancer.
