Description
EDC4 (Enhancer of mRNA Decapping 4) encodes a scaffold protein that is a core component of the mRNA decapping complex. It localizes to processing bodies (P-bodies) and facilitates the decapping and degradation of mRNAs, thereby regulating gene expression post-transcriptionally. EDC4 interacts with DCP1 and DCP2 to promote decapping activity.

Mutation functional classification
Loss of Function (LOF)
Nonsense and frameshift mutations that truncate the protein likely impair decapping complex assembly and mRNA turnover.
Gain of Function (GOF)
Not reported for EDC4.
Dominant Negative (DN)
Not established; potential if truncated protein interferes with wild-type complex formation.

Protein Summary
EDC4 is a 1401-amino acid scaffold protein that assembles the mRNA decapping complex. It contains WD40 repeats and a C-terminal domain that mediates interactions with DCP1 and DCP2. EDC4 is essential for efficient decapping and localizes to cytoplasmic P-bodies. Its expression is ubiquitous but enriched in testis and lymphoid tissues.
