What is Carbohydrate Metabolism ?
Carbohydrate metabolism involves the breakdown of sugars for energy (glycolysis, TCA cycle, pentose phosphate pathway) and their synthesis (gluconeogenesis, glycogen synthesis). It is tightly regulated by hormones (insulin, glucagon) and allosteric metabolites. Aberrant carbohydrate metabolism is central to diabetes, cancer (Warburg effect) and glycogen storage diseases.
